Education Foundation Announces Funding for Education Programs

Thanks to generous contributions from local community members and businesses, the Education Foundation for the Bend-La Pine School District has announced funding for educational programs throughout the Bend-La Pine School District.  On December 9, 2003, the Foundation's board of directors approved spending $17,000 of donated funds to support educational projects in 20 schools throughout the district.  Every school that submitted at least one proposal has received funding from the Foundation.

The private, nonprofit Foundation conducted its first Impact Grant program this fall and received grant proposals from teachers in almost every school.  At the same time, the Foundation has been conducting an ongoing campaign to raise funds to support these and other educational projects.

The funded proposals represent a broad range of educational initiatives that will benefit students in all age groups and with varied interests and needs.  Examples of projects that will receive funding from the Foundation include the development of a language learning lab for early readers, hands-on learning tools for math education, and books for young readers.  Teachers will also receive support for development of a new curriculum for teaching research skills, and for teaching arts to elementary students.  Middle school students will receive funds for music education, science laboratory equipment, and computers.  High school students throughout the district will benefit from support for several projects, including journalism classes and other programs.

“We’re very pleased to be able to offer these Impact Grants to teachers and schools,” said Mike Dugan, president of the Education Foundation. “Since our revival just a year ago, the Foundation has been working to establish the Impact Grant program so that we could start to meet some of the immediate needs of the schools. We’re pleased with our initial success, but hope to do more in the future.”

The Foundation will hold its first major fundraising event, The Spelling Bee Challenge, February 21. The just-for-fun contest pits adult teams of spellers against one another for the privilege of being inscribed on the roving event trophy. Funds raised by the event will support the Impact Grant program.

The Foundation received more than 55 grant proposals seeking a total of more than $100,000 to support valuable educational programs in the Bend-La Pine School District.  Each proposal was screened and reviewed by the respective school's site council to ensure that the proposal was consistent with the school's educational objectives.  Through this process, the Foundation has identified numerous projects of high educational value and that complement or strengthen existing programs.

Unfortunately, many well-deserving proposals could not be funded or were partially funded.  Thus, the Foundation is continuing to seek additional sources of funding or sponsors for specific projects.  Individuals or organizations interested in sponsoring a project are encouraged to contact the Education Foundation for the Bend-La Pine School District at 541-322-5493 for more information.  Projects still in need of funding will be displayed on the Foundation’s web site, www.educationfoundation.us, in the near future.

The Education Foundation for the Bend-La Pine School District is an independent, non-profit 501(c)3 organization founded by parents, concerned citizens, civic and business leaders, and educators.  The Foundation strives to enrich the education of students in the Bend-La Pine Public Schools by providing support for innovative programs and outstanding teaching, and by eliminating barriers to educational opportunities.
