Spelling Bee Donations Sweeten

Impact Grants

Education Foundation funds second round of school grants

(Bend, Oregon) – Donations from the first Spelling Bee Challenge, a fundraiser for the Education Foundation for Bend-La Pine School District,  has allowed the Foundation to make a second round of Impact Grants. The Foundation board of directors approved the release of over $15,000 for the additional grants at their meeting March 16.

Some of the funds were donations made directly to the Impact Grant program at the February 21 Spelling Bee Challenge. Items that had not been funded in the first round of grants were offered in a reverse auction, with many donors stepping up to pledge money toward math manipulatives, musical instruments, anatomy and physiology texts and equipment, forensic science texts, calculators, and new maps for social studies classes.

Other grant funds came from the general proceeds of the Spelling Bee. Almost $38,000 was raised to help enrich and enhance the educational opportunities available for students in Bend-La Pine Public Schools. “We were very pleased with the support the Foundation received through the Spelling Bee,” said organizer Marie Hackbarth, vice-president of the Foundation. “We had wonderful support from our major sponsors, the 48 Challenge teams, and our other contributors. Their generosity will have an immediate impact on students and classrooms.”

In December 2003, the Foundation directed $17,000 of donated funds to support educational projects in 20 schools throughout the district through the Impact Grant program.  Every school that submitted at least one proposal received funding from the Foundation. This second round of grants funds an additional 10 grant requests.

Major sponsors for the Spelling Bee Challenge were Unicom, Kirby Nagelhout Construction Company, and The Bulletin. Additional support was received from Athletic Club of Bend, Bend Anesthesiology Group, Bend Memorial Clinic, Bend Research Inc., Brooks Resources Corporation, Central Oregon Radiology, Mid Oregon Credit Union, RBC Dain Rauscher, and St Charles Medical Center Bend/Redmond.
