January 13, 2004 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SPELLING BEE CHALLENGE SET FOR FEBRUARY 21, 2004 (Bend, Oregon)-The first adult Spelling Bee Challenge presented by The Education Foundation for the Bend-LaPine School District will be held at The Athletic Club of Bend on Saturday, February 21, 2004. The spelling showdown will begin at 6:30 p.m. and features three-person teams from a wide variety of Bend-LaPine area service clubs, businesses, university alumni and individuals. The winning team will receive the coveted Spelling Bee Challenge Cup. “We have had a fantastic response from the community for this event”, stated Marie Hackbarth, the event committee chairperson. “This promises to be a fun-filled evening in support of the Foundation to benefit the students in Bend-LaPine public schools. The public is invited to come and join us.” Spelling Bee team entry fee is $375. Individual tickets to the event are $10 and will be available at Central Oregon Music beginning February 1st. Food and refreshments will be provided. All proceeds will benefit the Education Foundation for the Bend La-Pine School District, a local non-profit foundation established to enhance education in the Bend-LaPine communities. The Foundation recently announced its first series of Impact Grants, awarded to 20 schools in the district. Teachers identified needs and projects that could have an immediate impact on educational programs, and school site councils help prioritize the requests. Although the Foundation awarded at least one grant to every school that applied, there were still unmet requests. The Foundation hopes that funds raised through the Spelling Bee Challenge will provide more grants. Several impact grants will be auctioned at the event.
